Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Furniture Maker/Cabinet Maker to join our esteemed network of artisans, working with a reputable client in Warri, Delta. This role is ideal for an individual with a keen eye for detail, a deep understanding of woodworking techniques, and a commitment to producing high-quality, durable furniture and custom cabinetry. As a Furniture Maker/Cabinet Maker, you will be responsible for interpreting designs, selecting appropriate materials, constructing various types of furniture (tables, chairs, cabinets, wardrobes, etc.), and ensuring a flawless finish. You will work with a range of hand and power tools, adhering strictly to safety standards and project timelines. Key Responsibilities
- Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine dimensions, materials, and methods of construction for furniture and cabinetry.
- Precisely measure, cut, shape, and assemble wood and other materials using a variety of hand tools and power tools (e.g., saws, routers, sanders, planers, jointers).
- Construct and repair various types of furniture, custom cabinets, shelving units, wardrobes, and other wooden articles with meticulous attention to detail.
- Select and prepare appropriate wood materials, ensuring optimal quality, grain matching, and minimizing waste while adhering to project budgets.
- Apply various finishes to surfaces of wooden articles or furniture, including stains, varnishes, lacquers, paints, or other protective sealants, achieving a professional appearance.
- Install hardware such as hinges, handles, drawer slides, and other decorative or functional fittings accurately.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, regularly inspecting and ensuring all tools and machinery are in good working order and calibrated.
- Collaborate effectively with designers, project managers, and clients to understand project requirements, offer expert input, and ensure client satisfaction.
- Perform stringent quality checks on finished products at various stages to ensure they meet specified standards, design integrity, and client expectations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to the construction, assembly, or finishing of furniture pieces, demonstrating adaptability and problem-solving skills.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in advanced woodworking techniques and joinery (e.g., dovetail, mortise and tenon, biscuit, dowel joints).
- Expertise in operating and maintaining a wide range of hand and power tools safely and effectively (table saws, miter saws, routers, planers, sanders).
- Ability to accurately read and interpret complex technical drawings, blueprints, and material lists.
- Strong understanding of different wood types, wood movement, their properties, characteristics, and best applications.
- Exceptional precision, keen eye for detail, and a commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.
- Solid problem-solving skills, mechanical aptitude, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Physical stamina, strength, and dexterity required for handling materials and tools throughout the workday.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Commitment to workplace safety protocols and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal vocational training, apprenticeship, or certification in carpentry, joinery, furniture making, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of proven experience as a Furniture Maker, Cabinet Maker, or Finish Carpenter.
- Experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp) for design interpretation or creation is a plus.
- Knowledge of traditional and contemporary furniture design principles and styles.
- Ability to work with alternative materials (e.g., laminates, veneers, metals, glass) in furniture construction.
- Portfolio showcasing previous custom furniture or cabinetry projects.
