Are you a highly skilled and experienced translator with a passion for language accuracy and cultural nuance? AfriForum is seeking dedicated Freelance Remote Contract Translators to join our network of language experts. In this crucial role, you will be instrumental in bridging communication gaps, ensuring our messages resonate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences across South Africa. As a remote contractor, you’ll have the flexibility to manage your workload and contribute to impactful projects from anywhere, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and fidelity.
We are specifically looking for translators proficient in translating between English and any of South Africa’s other official languages (Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Sepedi, Setswana, Sesotho, Xitsonga, Siswati, Tshivenda, Ndebele). Your work will encompass a wide array of materials, including but not limited to, legal documents, policy reports, community outreach materials, website content, press statements, and internal communications. Each project will require not only linguistic expertise but also a deep understanding of the source material’s context and the target audience’s cultural sensitivities. Key Responsibilities
- Translate a variety of documents and content from English into one or more official South African languages, and vice-versa, ensuring accuracy, linguistic quality, and cultural appropriateness.
- Perform thorough self-revisions and quality checks on all translated materials to eliminate errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and terminology.
- Adhere strictly to project-specific glossaries, style guides, and terminology databases provided by AfriForum.
- Maintain consistency in terminology, tone, and style across all translated content.
- Manage multiple translation projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and meeting project deadlines.
- Communicate effectively with project managers regarding project status, challenges, and queries.
- Conduct research as needed to ensure accurate and appropriate translation of specialised or technical content.
- Maintain confidentiality of all materials and information handled during translation projects.
Required Skills
- Native-level fluency in at least one official South African language (e.g., Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Sepedi, etc.) in addition to English.
- Exceptional command of English, both written and spoken.
- Proven experience as a professional translator, preferably with a focus on legal, non-profit, or public communications content.
- Proficiency with Translation Memory (TM) tools and Terminology Management (TMG) software (e.g., SDL Trados, MemoQ, Memsource).
- Excellent grammar, punctuation, and stylistic writing skills in both source and target languages.
- Strong research skills to ensure accuracy and cultural relevance.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet strict deadlines.
- High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Translation, Linguistics, Modern Languages, or a related field.
- Formal translation certification or accreditation from a recognised body (e.g., SATI).
- Specialisation in legal, political, social sciences, or human rights terminology.
- Experience with localisation and cultural adaptation of content.
- Proficiency in additional official South African languages.
