Job Description
The Forestry Supervisor will play a critical role in managing and overseeing daily forestry operations within our extensive plantations in the Harding region of KwaZulu-Natal. This dynamic position demands a blend of strong leadership, profound technical expertise in silviculture, harvesting, and forest protection, and an unwavering commitment to safety, environmental best practices, and community engagement. You will be directly responsible for leading, motivating, and supervising a dedicated team of forestry workers, ensuring that all operational tasks – from precision planting and diligent tending of young trees to efficient harvesting, road maintenance, and site preparation – are executed with the utmost efficiency, safety, and adherence to Sappi’s rigorous quality standards.
Your day-to-day will be characterized by a hands-on approach, involving meticulous planning of work schedules, strategic allocation of labour and equipment resources, continuous monitoring of team performance against established targets, and conducting regular, thorough site inspections. These inspections are crucial for ensuring compliance with detailed operational plans, precise quality specifications, and all relevant legislative and environmental regulations. A key and multifaceted aspect of this role is not only the achievement of demanding production targets but also the cultivation of a positive, productive, and safe work environment. You will be instrumental in ensuring that team members are adequately trained, highly motivated, and adhere strictly to all health and safety protocols, fostering a culture of vigilance and responsibility.
Furthermore, you will be proactively involved in identifying potential operational risks, developing and implementing effective corrective actions, and continuously seeking opportunities for process improvement and the adoption of innovative forestry techniques. Effective and transparent communication with a diverse range of stakeholders – including contractors, local communities, government agencies, and senior management – is paramount to success in this role, ensuring collaborative problem-solving and maintaining Sappi’s reputation as a responsible corporate citizen. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a seasoned forestry professional to contribute significantly to sustainable forest management practices, make a tangible impact on the success of our operations, and ensure the long-term health and productivity of our natural resources. You will be at the forefront of implementing cutting-edge forestry science, balancing ecological conservation with commercial objectives.
