Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Forestry Manager to lead and optimize our extensive forestry operations across various sites in Rwanda, primarily managed from our Kigali office. This pivotal role involves overseeing the entire lifecycle of our diverse forest assets, from strategic planning and nursery management to sustainable planting, silviculture, harvesting, and land restoration. The successful candidate will be instrumental in implementing best practices in sustainable forest management, ensuring strict compliance with national and international environmental standards, and driving innovation in agroforestry and biomass production techniques. You will lead, mentor, and empower a dedicated team of forestry professionals, fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive sustainable forest management plans, including planting schedules, silvicultural treatments, harvesting strategies, and regeneration programs.
- Oversee the daily operations of multiple forestry plantations and natural forest areas, ensuring optimal resource utilization, quality control, and adherence to environmental regulations.
- Lead, motivate, and manage a diverse team of foresters, technicians, and field staff, promoting professional development, safety protocols, and high productivity standards.
- Conduct regular forest inventories, growth assessments, and health monitoring, utilizing advanced forestry techniques and GIS mapping tools for data-driven decision-making.
- Prepare, manage, and report on budgets for all forestry operations, ensuring cost-effectiveness and financial accountability.
- Ensure full compliance with all relevant Rwandan forestry laws, environmental protection regulations, and international certification standards (e.g., FSC).
- Engage proactively with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to foster positive relationships, promote sustainable land use practices, and resolve any conflicts.
- Implement and manage robust forest fire prevention, detection, and suppression programs.
- Identify and integrate innovative agroforestry systems and biomass energy production methods to enhance sustainability, productivity, and profitability.
- Manage forest road networks, infrastructure, and equipment, ensuring operational efficiency and safety.
- Contribute to the strategic planning and expansion of the company’s forestry portfolio and land acquisition initiatives.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in sustainable forest management, plantation management, or silviculture, preferably in a supervisory role.
- Demonstrated strong leadership, team management, and interpersonal skills.
- In-depth knowledge of Rwandan forestry regulations, environmental laws, and best management practices.
- Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and forestry inventory software.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Fluent in English and Kinyarwanda (both written and verbal communication).
- Ability to work effectively in challenging field conditions and often in remote locations.
- Proven experience in budget preparation and financial management pertaining to forestry operations.
- Valid driving license and a willingness to travel extensively within Rwanda.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or an MBA with a focus on environmental management.
- Certifications or extensive experience with international forest certification schemes (e.g., FSC, PEFC).
- Practical experience with agroforestry systems and biomass energy value chains.
- Previous involvement in community-based natural resource management or rural development projects.
- Proficiency in French is considered an advantageous asset.
