Job Description

KSADA is seeking a dedicated and experienced Fishery Manager to oversee and optimize our aquaculture projects in the Kafanchan zone. This pivotal role involves the comprehensive management of fish farming operations, ensuring sustainable production, efficient resource utilization, and adherence to best practices in aquaculture. The Fishery Manager will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of fish production, from hatchery management and grow-out systems to harvesting and post-harvest handling. You will play a critical role in developing and implementing strategies to improve fish health, maximize yield, and maintain environmental sustainability. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to local food security, drive economic empowerment within rural communities, and advance the aquaculture sector in Kaduna State. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership qualities, a deep understanding of fishery science, and a commitment to agricultural development. You will be instrumental in training local farmers, collecting valuable data, and reporting on project progress to ensure the success and expansion of our aquaculture initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of fish farms, including feeding, water quality management, and pond maintenance.
  • Develop and implement sustainable aquaculture practices to maximize fish yield and minimize environmental impact.
  • Manage fish breeding programs, hatchery operations, and fingerling production.
  • Monitor fish health, identify diseases, and implement appropriate treatment and preventative measures.
  • Maintain accurate records of fish stock, feed consumption, growth rates, and production costs.
  • Manage and supervise a team of fishery technicians and local farmhands, providing training and guidance.
  • Prepare and manage operational budgets, ensuring cost-effective resource allocation.
  • Conduct regular reporting on farm performance, challenges, and proposed solutions to senior management.
  • Engage with local communities and farmers, providing extension services and technical support on aquaculture best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Identify and implement innovative technologies and techniques to enhance fishery productivity and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with research institutions and other stakeholders to advance aquaculture knowledge and practices in the region.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in aquaculture and fish farm management.
  • Strong knowledge of fish biology, water quality parameters, and disease prevention.
  • Excellent leadership and team management abilities.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, especially in diagnosing and resolving farm issues.
  • Proficiency in data collection, record-keeping, and report generation.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and motivate staff and farmers.
  • Familiarity with agricultural development challenges and opportunities in Nigeria.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various farm equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, Marine Biology, or a related field.
  • Certifications in aquaculture management or food safety.
  • Experience with specific local fish species like African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and Tilapia.
  • Demonstrated project management experience in an agricultural context.
  • Proficiency in local languages relevant to Kafanchan (e.g., Hausa, Jaba).
