You will be instrumental in driving innovation, optimizing resource utilization, and maintaining strict adherence to local and international quality and regulatory standards. As Fisheries Manager, your expertise will directly impact the growth and success of our operations, fostering a healthy and productive ecosystem within our farms while contributing significantly to the broader food security initiatives in Rwanda. We are looking for an individual who is not only a technical expert but also a strong leader capable of inspiring and developing a high-performing team in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the aquaculture farm, including pond/cage management, water quality monitoring, feed management, and disease prevention and control.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine sustainable aquaculture practices, ensuring environmental compliance, resource efficiency, and minimal ecological footprint.
  • Lead and manage breeding programs, hatchery operations, and nursery management to ensure a consistent supply of healthy, high-quality fingerlings.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise a team of fisheries technicians and farm staff, fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
  • Monitor fish health, growth rates, feed conversion ratios (FCR), and overall productivity, adjusting protocols and strategies as necessary to optimize output and profitability.
  • Manage inventory of feed, chemicals, equipment, and other consumables, ensuring timely procurement, cost-effective utilization, and accurate record-keeping.
  • Prepare comprehensive production reports, financial budgets, and operational forecasts, presenting findings and recommendations to senior management.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all national and international regulations, standards, and best practices pertaining to fisheries, aquaculture, and food safety (e.g., HACCP).
  • Implement and maintain robust biosecurity protocols across all farm facilities to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases.
  • Collaborate with research institutions, government agencies, and industry experts to integrate innovative technologies, research findings, and advanced practices into farm operations.
  • Contribute to market analysis and product development initiatives, identifying opportunities for growth, diversification, and value addition.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of all farm equipment, infrastructure, and facilities, ensuring optimal working conditions and operational longevity.
  • Engage actively with local communities, government stakeholders, and environmental groups to promote responsible fisheries management and build positive, collaborative relationships.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of proven experience in aquaculture or fisheries management.
  • Strong knowledge of fish biology, aquatic ecology, and aquaculture production systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in team leadership, staff training, and performance management.
  • Proficiency in water quality management, disease diagnosis, and treatment protocols.
  • Excellent analytical skills for data interpretation, budgeting, and forecasting.
