Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and community-oriented Fisheries Extension Officer to join our dynamic team in Azare, Bauchi. This pivotal role involves working directly with local fish farmers, providing essential technical guidance, and facilitating the adoption of improved aquaculture practices. The successful candidate will be instrumental in bridging the gap between scientific research and practical application on the ground, ensuring that fish farmers in Azare and surrounding communities have the knowledge and resources to maximize their yields and operate sustainably.

Your day-to-day activities will include conducting regular field visits to various fish farms, diagnosing fish diseases and recommending appropriate treatments, advising on optimal pond management, feed formulation, and breeding techniques suitable for the local environment. You will be responsible for organizing and delivering engaging training workshops, practical demonstrations, and farmer field schools to build local capacity and foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation among fish farmers. Furthermore, you will play a critical role in collecting and analyzing data on fisheries production, identifying key challenges faced by farmers, and providing valuable feedback to the programme management for informed policy formulation and the development of targeted intervention strategies. This role demands strong interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of aquaculture principles, and a genuine passion for community development and rural upliftment. You will be a vital link in enhancing food security, promoting economic empowerment, and fostering resilient livelihoods within the Azare agricultural landscape. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular field visits to fish farms within Azare and its environs to provide on-site technical assistance, advice, and problem-solving support.
  • Organize and facilitate training sessions, workshops, and practical demonstrations for fish farmers on modern aquaculture techniques, including species selection and integrated farming.
  • Assist farmers in pond construction, management, water quality testing, feed management strategies, and effective fish health monitoring.
  • Diagnose common fish diseases, identify pests, and recommend appropriate preventative and curative measures, including biosecurity protocols.
  • Collect and maintain accurate data on fisheries production, farmer demographics, input usage, and challenges faced, contributing to programme monitoring and evaluation.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on field activities, training outcomes, and progress towards programme objectives, ensuring timely submission.
  • Disseminate relevant research findings, improved technologies, and innovative practices from research institutions to local farmers in an understandable format.
  • Promote the adoption of environmentally friendly and sustainable aquaculture practices to ensure long-term ecological balance.
  • Liaise effectively with community leaders, local government authorities, relevant NGOs, and other stakeholders to enhance program effectiveness and reach.

Required Skills

  • Proven knowledge and practical experience in aquaculture and fish farming techniques, including hatchery and grow-out operations.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific information clearly to diverse rural audiences.
  • Excellent observational and analytical problem-solving abilities, particularly in diagnosing fish health issues and environmental challenges.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in remote and sometimes challenging field environments.
  • Proficiency in data collection, basic statistical analysis, and comprehensive report writing.
  • Fluency in English and Hausa (the predominant local language) is essential for effective community engagement.
  • Basic computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, Agricultural Extension, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Previous experience working as an Extension Officer or in community development roles focused on agriculture or fisheries.
  • Valid motorcycle riding license and a demonstrated willingness to travel extensively within the operational area.
  • Familiarity with local government structures, rural development initiatives, and community dynamics in Bauchi State.
