Are you a dedicated and hands-on professional with a passion for aquaculture and sustainable food systems? Tilapia Aqua Farm Ltd. is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Fisheries and Aquaculture Technician to join our dynamic team in Kigali, Rwanda. This vital role involves the day-to-day operational management and technical support across our fish farming facilities, ensuring optimal conditions for fish growth, health, and productivity. As a Fisheries and Aquaculture Technician, you will be instrumental in the practical application of best aquaculture practices, directly contributing to our mission of providing high-quality, sustainably farmed Tilapia to the Rwandan market.
Your responsibilities will span various critical areas, beginning with meticulous water quality management. You will regularly monitor and adjust parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates to create an ideal aquatic environment, crucial for the well-being and development of our Tilapia. You will be actively involved in comprehensive fish husbandry, from precise feeding schedules and accurate grading to observing fish behavior, identifying any signs of disease or stress, and implementing preventative health measures. The role requires a keen eye for detail and a proactive approach to maintaining and troubleshooting facility infrastructure, including tanks, ponds, recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS), filtration units, and aeration equipment, ensuring all systems operate efficiently and effectively.
Data collection and accurate record-keeping will be a crucial part of your daily routine. You will systematically document growth rates, feed conversion ratios (FCR), water quality parameters, stock inventories, and treatment records. This data is essential for performance analysis, continuous improvement, and informing strategic farm management decisions. Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and maintain optimal water quality parameters (pH, DO, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates).
- Perform daily fish feeding, grading, and general husbandry tasks.
- Observe fish health, identify signs of disease or stress, and implement preventative measures.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot aquaculture equipment, including pumps, filters, and aeration systems.
- Conduct routine maintenance and cleaning of tanks, ponds, and recirculation systems.
- Collect and accurately record data on fish growth, feed consumption, water quality, and inventory.
- Assist in the stocking, harvesting, and processing of fish.
- Ensure strict adherence to biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks.
- Participate in facility improvements and innovative aquaculture projects.
- Collaborate effectively with the farm management team and other technicians.
Required Skills
- Diploma or Certificate in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, or a related agricultural field.
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience in aquaculture or fish farming operations.
- Strong understanding of water chemistry and aquatic environmental management.
- Proficiency in fish handling, feeding, and basic health monitoring.
- Ability to operate and maintain aquaculture machinery and equipment.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and record keeping.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive work ethic.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries, Marine Biology, or a related science.
- Experience with Tilapia species cultivation.
- Knowledge of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS).
- Familiarity with disease prevention and treatment protocols in aquaculture.
- Experience in data analysis and reporting.
- Certification in first aid or aquatic safety.
