Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Field Engineer II specializing in Production Automation to join our dynamic team in Mozambique. This pivotal role involves providing expert technical support and ensuring the optimal performance of advanced automation systems across our natural gas production facilities. As a Field Engineer, you will be on the front lines, directly responsible for the comprehensive lifecycle management of industrial control systems. This includes the meticulous installation, precise commissioning, routine preventative maintenance, complex corrective troubleshooting, and continuous optimization of a wide array of critical automation assets. Your expertise will cover Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and diverse field instrumentation essential for safe and efficient operations. Your work will be crucial in maximizing operational efficiency, ensuring system reliability, and consistently upholding our stringent safety and environmental standards within the challenging and rewarding energy sector.

This position demands a proactive individual with a strong analytical mindset, capable of diagnosing and resolving highly complex technical issues, and implementing effective, sustainable solutions under demanding operational pressures. You will work closely and collaboratively with various multidisciplinary teams, including operations, maintenance, and project development teams, providing invaluable technical guidance and actively contributing to continuous improvement initiatives that drive innovation and efficiency. The role involves frequent, hands-on site visits to our remote and critical production facilities, requiring a strong commitment to stringent safety protocols, a keen eye for detail, and the adaptability to thrive in diverse and dynamic working environments. You will be instrumental in the full lifecycle management of automation assets, from providing support during conceptual design phases through to successful operational handover and ongoing technical support, ensuring that our production processes are robust, highly efficient, and fully compliant with all local and international regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities

  • Execute installation, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities for automation systems (PLC, DCS, SCADA) and field instrumentation in production facilities.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on control systems, including software and hardware components.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex automation and control system issues to minimize downtime and optimize operational performance.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and project teams to implement control system modifications and upgrades.
  • Conduct thorough root cause analyses for system failures and implement long-term solutions.
  • Ensure all automation activities comply with company safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of shutdown and turnaround activities related to automation systems.
  • Provide technical support and training to junior engineers and operations personnel.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of automation system configurations, modifications, and maintenance records.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and implement automation solutions to enhance efficiency and reliability.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years (48 months) of proven experience in industrial automation and control systems, preferably in the oil and gas or petrochemical industry.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider Electric) and DCS systems (e.g., Emerson DeltaV, Honeywell Experion).
  • Strong understanding of SCADA systems, HMI development, and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
  • In-depth knowledge of process instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level transmitters) and control valves.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex automation system issues and electrical circuits.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Certification in specific PLC/DCS vendor systems.
  • Experience with functional safety systems (SIS) and relevant standards (IEC 61511).
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices for industrial control systems (ICS).
  • Proficiency in Portuguese (written and spoken) is highly advantageous.
  • Project management experience in automation system implementations.
