Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and experienced farmer to join our team at our demonstration farm located just outside of Portland. This role involves all aspects of sustainable farming practices, from seed starting and planting to harvesting and post-harvest handling. You will be a key player in our efforts to educate the public about organic farming techniques, sustainable food systems, and the importance of locally sourced produce. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, highly organized, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. You will have a strong understanding of organic farming principles and a commitment to environmentally sound practices. This is a hands-on role requiring physical stamina and a willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions. The successful candidate will be deeply passionate about organic farming and committed to MOFGA’s mission of supporting a vibrant and sustainable agricultural community in Maine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planting, cultivating, and harvesting a variety of crops using organic methods.
  • Managing soil health through composting, cover cropping, and other sustainable practices.
  • Maintaining farm equipment and infrastructure.
  • Implementing pest and disease management strategies.
  • Participating in farm tours and educational events to share knowledge with the public.
  • Assisting with record-keeping and other administrative tasks.
  • Collaborating with other farm staff to ensure efficient and effective operations.
  • Contributing to the overall success and sustainability of the demonstration farm.

Required Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of organic farming techniques and practices.
  • Experience with crop production, including planting, cultivation, and harvesting.
  • Ability to operate and maintain farm equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, or a related field.
  • Certification in organic farming or a related area.
  • Experience with CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) operations.
  • Experience with farm management software.
  • Experience in public education or outreach.
