Job Description

Caledonia Farms is seeking a dedicated and energetic Farm Hand to join our dynamic team in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily operations of a diverse farm, playing a crucial role in cultivating crops, caring for livestock, and maintaining our farm infrastructure. As a Farm Hand, you will be an integral part of our daily rhythm, working closely with experienced farmers to ensure the health of our animals and the productivity of our fields. This role requires a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and the physical stamina to handle varied tasks in all weather conditions. You’ll gain hands-on experience across various aspects of agriculture, from planting and harvesting to animal husbandry and equipment operation. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general farm duties including planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops (vegetables, fruits, hay, etc.).
  • Assist with the care and feeding of livestock (cattle, sheep, poultry) including mucking stalls, moving animals, and monitoring health.
  • Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment such as tractors, tillers, and ATVs.
  • Participate in farm infrastructure maintenance, including fencing, building repairs, and groundskeeping.
  • Assist with irrigation, weeding, pest control, and soil management.
  • Help with processing and packaging farm products for sale.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and animal welfare standards.
  • Work collaboratively with other farm staff to achieve daily operational goals.

Required Skills

  • Proven physical stamina and ability to perform strenuous tasks outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Basic understanding of agricultural principles or a strong willingness to learn.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and basic farm equipment.
  • Reliable, punctual, and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to farm tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working on a farm or in an agricultural setting.
  • Experience operating larger farm machinery (e.g., tractors, skid steers).
  • Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver's License (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of organic farming practices.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment troubleshooting and minor repairs.
