Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive physical examinations, diagnose illnesses, and develop effective treatment plans for small animals and, where applicable, large animals.
- Conduct surgical procedures, including routine spays/neuters, soft tissue surgeries, and emergency interventions.
- Provide preventative care services such as vaccinations, parasite control, dental care, and nutritional counseling.
- Utilize advanced diagnostic tools including in-house laboratory, radiography, and ultrasound.
- Maintain accurate and thorough medical records, ensuring compliance with practice standards and regulatory requirements.
- Communicate effectively and empathetically with pet owners, providing clear explanations of diagnoses, prognoses, and treatment options.
- Participate in on-call or after-hours emergency rotations as required.
- Collaborate with veterinary nurses and support staff to ensure seamless patient care and efficient clinic operations.
- Engage in remote consultations and follow-ups using telecommunication platforms for suitable cases.
- Manage administrative duties, case research, and continuing professional development activities remotely.
- Mentor and support junior staff, contributing to a positive and educational team environment.
Required Skills
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) degree from an accredited institution.
- Current registration in good standing with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
- Minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience in small animal practice.
- Proven proficiency in diagnostic techniques, internal medicine, and common surgical procedures.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client education skills.
- Strong ethical standards and a compassionate approach to animal care.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
- Proficiency in veterinary practice management software and basic computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with large animal or mixed practice.
- Advanced certifications or special interests in specific areas of veterinary medicine (e.g., dentistry, orthopaedics, ultrasonography).
