African Parks is seeking an Experienced Tour Guide to join our dedicated team, primarily supporting our ecotourism initiatives within and around Rwanda’s protected areas. This role is crucial in creating unforgettable and educational experiences for our visitors, ensuring they connect deeply with the natural beauty and rich heritage of the Land of a Thousand Hills.
As a Tour Guide, you will lead individuals and groups on diverse safaris and cultural excursions, ranging from wildlife drives in Akagera, primate trekking in Nyungwe, to immersive cultural village visits and historical site explorations across Rwanda. You will be responsible for providing expert commentary on flora, fauna, conservation efforts, local traditions, history, and community life. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and conduct guided tours for individuals and groups, focusing on wildlife viewing (safari drives, bird watching, primate trekking) and cultural experiences (village visits, historical sites, local artisan workshops).
- Provide accurate, engaging, and educational commentary on Rwanda's wildlife, ecosystems, history, culture, and conservation initiatives.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all tour participants at all times, adhering strictly to park regulations and safety protocols.
- Operate and maintain safari vehicles, ensuring they are clean, in good working condition, and equipped for all tour requirements.
- Assist with itinerary planning and logistics, ensuring smooth transitions between activities and locations.
- Handle guest inquiries, concerns, and special requests professionally and efficiently.
- Promote sustainable tourism practices and educate guests on responsible interaction with wildlife and local communities.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of park rules, wildlife movements, cultural developments, and safety procedures.
- Prepare daily tour reports, including guest feedback, wildlife sightings, and any incidents encountered.
- Collaborate with park staff, local communities, and other tourism stakeholders to enhance guest experiences.
Required Skills
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience as a tour guide, specifically with wildlife and cultural tours in Rwanda or East Africa.
- Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda is essential; proficiency in French is highly desirable.
- Valid Rwandan driving license (Category B/C1/D) with a clean driving record and extensive experience with 4×4 vehicles.
- In-depth knowledge of Rwanda's flora, fauna, geography, history, and diverse cultures.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and storytelling skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and extended periods in remote locations.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Demonstrated passion for conservation and sustainable tourism.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Tourism, Hospitality, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Professional tour guiding certification from a recognized institution.
- Additional language proficiencies (e.g., German, Spanish, Swahili).
- Experience in birding and ornithology.
- Knowledge of photography and videography to assist guests.
