Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate heavy-duty trucks (e.g., articulated trucks, rigid trucks with trailers) for long-distance routes, adhering to all traffic laws and company policies.
- Transport goods and materials across designated long-haul routes efficiently and punctually.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and trailers, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, delivery manifests, and other required documentation, including electronic logging devices (ELDs).
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, clients, and other team members regarding delays, incidents, or delivery issues.
- Load and unload cargo safely, or supervise the loading/unloading process, ensuring proper weight distribution and securement.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols and regulations, including hazardous materials handling (if applicable).
- Perform minor roadside repairs and routine maintenance checks as needed.
- Represent the company professionally to clients and the public.
Required Skills
- Valid Code EC (or equivalent) driver's license with PRDP (Professional Driving Permit) for heavy goods vehicles.
- Minimum of 2 years verifiable experience as a long-haul truck driver.
- Clean driving record with no major accidents or traffic violations.
- In-depth knowledge of South African road traffic regulations and logistics routes.
- Proven ability to operate heavy-duty vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Strong understanding of vehicle mechanics for basic troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage long hours on the road.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with various types of cargo, including hazardous materials (with relevant certification).
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and other modern logistics technology.
- Post-matric certificate in logistics or transport management.
- First Aid and advanced driving course certifications.
