Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Industrial Electrician to join our dedicated team at the Hendrina Power Station. This pivotal role involves the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex electrical systems and components within a heavy industrial environment. As an Electrician at Eskom, you will be instrumental in ensuring the continuous and safe operation of our plant, upholding the highest standards of electrical integrity and safety protocols. You will work with a wide range of electrical equipment, including motors, control panels, switchgear, PLC systems, and instrumentation. This position demands a meticulous approach, a strong understanding of industrial electrical codes and practices, and a proactive attitude towards problem-solving. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled electrical work in the installation, maintenance, inspection, repair, and modification of electrical systems, equipment, and components at the power station.
  • Troubleshoot complex electrical malfunctions in industrial machinery and control systems, using schematics, multimeters, and other testing equipment.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on electrical systems to minimize downtime and ensure operational reliability.
  • Install new electrical wiring, conduits, cables, and equipment according to blueprints, specifications, and relevant electrical codes.
  • Inspect and test electrical systems and components to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational efficiency.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and outages, performing rapid diagnostics and repairs to restore power.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, company policies, and environmental standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to identify areas for improvement and implement electrical upgrades.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior electricians or apprentices when required.

Required Skills

  • Matric/Grade 12 with a N3/N4 certificate in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Recognized Trade Test Certificate as an Electrician (e.g., Red Seal).
  • Minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience as an Industrial Electrician, preferably in a power generation, mining, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial control systems, PLC logic, motor controls, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and repairing complex electrical faults.
  • In-depth understanding of OHS Act and associated electrical regulations (e.g., SANS 10142-1).
  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid South African driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • N5/N6 certificate or National Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with high-voltage systems (up to 11kV).
  • Knowledge of substation equipment and protection systems.
  • Experience with CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management Systems).
  • Familiarity with Eskom-specific safety procedures and operational protocols.
