Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Farm Manager to oversee the daily operations of one of our commercial produce farms in the Mooketsi region. This pivotal role requires a hands-on leader with a deep understanding of modern agricultural practices, particularly in large-scale vegetable and fruit production. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring optimal crop yields, efficient resource management, and the overall profitability of the farm. You will lead a dedicated team, implement best practices for planting, irrigation, pest control, and harvesting, all while upholding ZZ2’s stringent quality standards and commitment to sustainable ‘Natuurboerdery’ principles. This role demands strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and a proactive approach to farm management, encompassing everything from technical agricultural expertise to financial oversight and staff development. The Farm Manager will report directly to the Regional Operations Manager and play a crucial role in the strategic planning and execution of farming cycles, ensuring compliance with all agricultural regulations and company policies. Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of daily farm operations, including planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.
- Develop and implement detailed crop plans, ensuring optimal timing and resource allocation for maximum yield and quality.
- Oversee and manage farm personnel, including recruitment, training, performance management, and scheduling to foster a productive and safe working environment.
- Monitor and maintain farm machinery, equipment, and infrastructure, ensuring operational efficiency and timely repairs.
- Implement and uphold ZZ2's 'Natuurboerdery' principles, focusing on sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices.
- Manage farm budgets, expenses, and inventory, ensuring cost-effective operations and accurate record-keeping.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, environmental, and agricultural regulations and standards.
- Analyze production data, identify areas for improvement, and implement innovative solutions to enhance productivity and profitability.
- Collaborate with sales, logistics, and quality assurance teams to ensure seamless produce flow and market readiness.
- Prepare regular reports on farm performance, production forecasts, and budgetary status for senior management.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in all farm processes and practices.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 4 years) in large-scale commercial farming operations, specifically in vegetable and/or fruit production.
- Strong knowledge of agricultural science, crop physiology, soil health, and integrated pest management strategies.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate, train, and develop staff.
- Excellent planning, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with a proactive mindset.
- Proficiency in farm management software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Valid South African driver's license and own reliable transport.
- Ability to work long hours, including weekends and public holidays, and adapt to seasonal demands and changing weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree or National Diploma in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a closely related field.
- Experience with advanced irrigation systems and water management techniques.
- Knowledge of GlobalGAP standards or similar quality assurance and food safety systems.
- Fluency in Afrikaans and/or a local Limpopo language (e.g., Sepedi, Tsonga) in addition to English.
- Previous experience with 'Natuurboerdery' or other sustainable and regenerative farming methodologies.
