Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Animal Herder to join our team in Gombe, Gombe. This is a vital role focused on the daily management, care, and well-being of our livestock, which includes cattle, goats, and sheep. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and productivity of the herd, applying both traditional herding techniques and modern animal welfare practices. This position requires a deep understanding of animal behavior, excellent observational skills, and the physical stamina to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
As an Animal Herder, you will be on the front lines of our agricultural operations, directly contributing to the sustenance and growth of our community’s food supply. You will guide livestock to appropriate grazing areas, protect them from predators, and meticulously monitor their health, reporting any concerns promptly. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily herding and grazing of livestock (cattle, goats, sheep) to designated pastures.
- Monitor the health and welfare of all animals, identifying and reporting any signs of illness, injury, or distress immediately.
- Ensure the safety and security of the herd, protecting them from predators and preventing straying.
- Assist with moving livestock between different grazing areas, kraals, or market points as required.
- Participate in routine animal husbandry tasks, including assisting with vaccinations, deworming, and birthing.
- Maintain clean and safe housing conditions for animals, including kraals and water points.
- Implement basic first aid for injured animals under supervision.
- Keep accurate, basic records of herd size, movements, and observed health issues.
- Communicate effectively with farm management regarding herd status and operational needs.
- Adhere strictly to all animal welfare guidelines and safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as an Animal Herder or in similar livestock management roles.
- Strong understanding of animal behavior and welfare, particularly for local livestock breeds.
- Excellent physical stamina and ability to work outdoors for long hours in all weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of common animal diseases and preventative measures.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Good communication skills in English and/or local languages.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal training or certification in animal husbandry, agriculture, or a related field.
