Job Description
This is a unique opportunity for a dedicated and passionate Environmental Warden to join Conservation South Africa (CSA) in a fully remote capacity, serving the Ngqeleni area of the Eastern Cape. As an Environmental Warden, you will play a crucial role in the remote monitoring, protection, and responsible management of local natural resources and ecosystems. Your primary focus will be to support conservation efforts by detecting environmental infractions, engaging with local communities on best practices, and collecting vital data from your home base in Ngqeleni. This remote position requires a high degree of self-motivation, excellent observational skills, and a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship.
You will be responsible for remotely monitoring designated environmental areas within and around Ngqeleni, utilizing available technology and established community networks to identify potential threats such as illegal dumping, poaching, uncontrolled fires, or unauthorized resource extraction. A significant part of your role will involve building strong, trusting relationships with local community members, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to foster a shared understanding of environmental protection and sustainable living. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct remote monitoring of designated natural areas within the Ngqeleni region for environmental infractions using available tools and community intelligence.
- Identify and accurately report instances of illegal dumping, poaching, unauthorized land use, habitat destruction, and other environmental violations.
- Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with local communities, traditional authorities, and key stakeholders to promote environmental awareness and cooperation.
- Act as a community liaison for environmental concerns, gathering feedback and clearly communicating CSA's conservation objectives.
- Collect and accurately record data on local biodiversity, environmental conditions, and human impact for reporting and analysis.
- Prepare detailed and timely reports on monitoring activities, incidents, and community engagement efforts.
- Participate actively in remote team meetings and training sessions to stay updated on conservation strategies and protocols.
- Support educational initiatives by sharing information about sustainable practices with local communities.
- Assist in the preliminary investigation of environmental incidents and provide support for enforcement actions where applicable.
