Job Description

Zimplats Holdings Limited is seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental Officer to join our dynamic team at our Ngezi operations. This crucial role is instrumental in ensuring that our mining activities comply with all national and international environmental regulations, company policies, and best practice standards. The Environmental Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of environmental management plans, monitoring environmental performance, and identifying areas for improvement across our mining and processing sites. You will play a key role in conducting environmental impact assessments, developing mitigation strategies, and overseeing the rehabilitation of disturbed land. This position requires a proactive individual with a strong understanding of environmental science, an ability to interpret complex data, and a commitment to promoting a culture of environmental responsibility within the organization. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with various departments, including operations, safety, and community relations, to minimize our ecological footprint and enhance our environmental sustainability performance. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor environmental management plans and systems.
  • Conduct regular environmental inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental legislation, permits, and company policies.
  • Manage environmental monitoring programs (e.g., water, air quality, noise, biodiversity).
  • Prepare comprehensive environmental reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead environmental incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate waste management programs, including hazardous waste disposal.
  • Oversee land rehabilitation and closure planning activities.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for new projects or modifications.
  • Provide environmental training and awareness to employees and contractors.
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities, local communities, and environmental groups.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Environmental Officer, preferably in the mining sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of Zimbabwean environmental legislation and international standards (e.g., ISO 14001).
  • Proven experience in environmental monitoring, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of environmental impact assessments and management systems.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and environmental management software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a challenging industrial environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Environmental Management or a related discipline.
  • Professional certification in environmental management (e.g., EMS Lead Auditor).
  • Experience with PGM mining operations and associated environmental challenges.
  • Knowledge of geographical information systems (GIS) for environmental mapping.
  • Proven ability to manage environmental projects from conception to completion.
