Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Consultant to join our dynamic team, operating remotely from the Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal region. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance to contribute to diverse projects across South Africa. As an Environmental Consultant, you will play a crucial role in managing and executing a wide range of environmental assessments and studies. Your responsibilities will span the entire project lifecycle, from initial scoping and proposal development to stakeholder engagement, impact assessment, and the preparation of comprehensive environmental reports. Given the remote nature of this position, the successful candidate must demonstrate exceptional self-discipline, time management skills, and the ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with project teams and clients located across various regions. You will be instrumental in conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Basic Assessments (BAs), Water Use License Applications (WULAs), Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs), and other specialized studies in accordance with national and provincial legislation. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, scientifically robust environmental solutions that meet both client needs and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage environmental projects, including Basic Assessments (BAs), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs), and Waste Management Licences (WMLs).
  • Conduct thorough desktop reviews, site investigations, and data collection to inform environmental assessments.
  • Draft and review technical reports, including Scoping Reports, Environmental Impact Reports, Environmental Authorisation Applications, and public consultation documentation.
  • Facilitate and manage public participation processes, including stakeholder identification, public meetings, and comment response reports.
  • Liaise effectively with clients, regulatory authorities (e.g., DFFE, DWS, EDTEA), and other project team members.
  • Ensure all project deliverables comply with relevant environmental legislation, policies, and best practices.
  • Assist in the preparation of project proposals, tenders, and budget estimations.
  • Provide expert advice on environmental risks, opportunities, and mitigation measures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental legislation, policies, and emerging trends in South Africa.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of proven experience in environmental consulting within South Africa.
  • Strong understanding of NEMA, EIA Regulations, Water Act, and other relevant environmental legislation.
  • Proficiency in drafting comprehensive technical reports and proposals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation abilities.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including budget and timeline adherence.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a remote setting.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel for site visits when required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registration with a relevant professional body (e.g., EAPASA).
  • Postgraduate degree (Honours or Masters) in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Familiarity with environmental auditing and monitoring.
  • Prior experience working on projects within the KwaZulu-Natal province.
