The successful candidate will be instrumental in improving patient outcomes through evidence-based dietary interventions, catering to a diverse patient population ranging from acute care to chronic disease management. You will be responsible for assessing nutritional needs, developing personalized meal plans, and educating patients and their families on healthy eating habits. Your expertise will directly contribute to patients’ recovery, overall health, and quality of life.

This role demands strong clinical skills, excellent communication, and a genuine commitment to public health. You will collaborate closely with doctors, nurses, and other allied health professionals to integrate nutritional strategies into holistic patient care plans, addressing a wide array of conditions including diabetes, hypertension, renal failure, malnutrition, and post-surgical recovery. We are looking for someone who is not only clinically proficient but also passionate about community engagement and promoting health literacy in a rural setting. This position offers a chance to grow professionally while contributing significantly to the health infrastructure of the Northern Cape, positively impacting individuals and families in their journey towards better health and well-being. Your work will directly support the hospital’s mission to deliver comprehensive and patient-centred healthcare services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments for inpatients and outpatients, evaluating dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters, and clinical status.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized medical nutrition therapy plans based on patient needs, medical conditions, and cultural preferences, ensuring alignment with evidence-based practices.
  • Provide dietary counselling and education to patients, their families, and caregivers on various health conditions, dietary modifications, and healthy eating practices in an understandable and empathetic manner.
  • Collaborate effectively with medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals to ensure integrated and holistic patient care plans are developed and implemented.
  • Participate in ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and case conferences to discuss patient progress, optimize nutritional interventions, and contribute expert dietary advice.
  • Contribute to the development and review of hospital nutrition policies, procedures, and educational materials to enhance service delivery and patient outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and thorough patient records in compliance with professional, ethical, and institutional standards.
  • Assist in community health initiatives and workshops focused on nutrition and wellness, as required, to promote public health awareness and education.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition from an accredited institution.
  • Current and valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Dietitian.
  • Minimum of 1 year post-community service clinical experience as a Dietitian in a hospital or clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy for a wide range of conditions across various patient demographics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex nutritional information clearly, empathetically, and effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in conducting thorough nutritional assessments and developing evidence-based, individualized intervention plans.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate diploma or Master's degree in Dietetics or a related field, demonstrating advanced clinical knowledge.
  • Experience working specifically in a public health sector or rural healthcare environment.
  • Fluency in Afrikaans or Xhosa will be a significant advantage, given the local community demographics, enhancing patient communication and engagement.

  • Generous annual leave and sick leave provisions, promoting work-life balance.
  • Access to a comprehensive government-subsidized medical aid scheme.
  • Membership in the Government Employees Pension Fund, securing your future.
