Job Description
Exxaro Resources is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Diesel Mechanic to join our dynamic maintenance team at the Grootegeluk Mine in Lephalale (Ellisras), Limpopo. As a Diesel Mechanic, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the optimal performance, reliability, and safety of our extensive fleet of heavy mining equipment and vehicles. This includes, but is not limited to, excavators, dump trucks, bulldozers, graders, drill rigs, and light vehicles. Your expertise will be essential in conducting preventative maintenance, performing complex diagnostics, troubleshooting mechanical failures, and executing efficient repairs to minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency across our expansive mining operations. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and electrical components common in heavy industrial machinery. We are looking for an individual who is meticulous, proactive, safety-conscious, and capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative maintenance team. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on a diverse range of heavy diesel equipment and vehicles in accordance with established schedules and manufacturer specifications.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical faults using specialized diagnostic tools, software, and equipment.
- Execute complex repairs and overhauls of diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering mechanisms, and other critical components.
- Conduct thorough inspections to identify potential issues, address latent defects, and ensure compliance with all safety standards and operational requirements.
- Document all maintenance and repair activities accurately and comprehensively using the company's asset management system.
- Order and manage spare parts and consumables, ensuring proper inventory levels and timely availability.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, environmental regulations, and company policies, fostering a culture of zero harm.
- Collaborate effectively with production teams and other maintenance personnel to coordinate repair efforts and minimize operational disruptions.
- Participate in ongoing training and development programs to stay updated with new technologies, equipment, and maintenance best practices.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior mechanics or apprentices where applicable, fostering skill development within the team.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Diesel Mechanic, with at least 4 years in a heavy industrial or mining environment.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities for diesel engines, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
- Proficiency in interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment for testing and diagnostic purposes safely.
- Excellent understanding of safety regulations and best practices in a workshop and field environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective team collaboration.
- Valid Code B (08) driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Trade Test Certificate as a Diesel Mechanic (e.g., Section 13 or NQF Level 4 equivalent).
- Experience with specific mining equipment brands such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, and Bell.
- Knowledge of condition monitoring techniques and predictive maintenance strategies.
- Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Valid Heavy Duty Driver's License (Code EC/EC1).
