Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and results-driven Debt Collector to join our vibrant team at the Tsakane branch. In this critical role, you will be responsible for recovering outstanding debts while upholding African Bank’s commitment to fair and ethical practices. Your primary objective will be to engage with customers who have fallen behind on their payments, understanding their individual circumstances, and negotiating viable payment arrangements that benefit both the customer and the bank. This role requires exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, coupled with a compassionate yet firm approach.

You will manage a portfolio of overdue accounts, utilizing various communication channels to connect with debtors. A key aspect of this position is the ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of all interactions and agreements, ensuring strict adherence to the National Credit Act and internal compliance policies. We are looking for an individual who can work effectively under pressure, consistently meet collection targets, and contribute positively to our team’s overall success. Key Responsibilities

  • Contact debtors via phone, email, and other authorized communication channels to recover outstanding balances.
  • Negotiate realistic and sustainable payment plans that align with both customer affordability and company policies.
  • Accurately record and update all debtor information, communication, and payment arrangements in the collections system.
  • Adhere strictly to all relevant legislation (e.g., National Credit Act) and internal compliance procedures.
  • Proactively identify and address reasons for non-payment, offering appropriate solutions and support.
  • Meet and exceed individual and team-based collection targets and KPIs.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, treating all debtors with respect and professionalism.
  • Escalate complex cases or disputes to management as necessary.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to resolve customer queries and ensure accurate account reconciliation.
  • Stay informed about industry best practices and regulatory changes affecting debt collection.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years proven experience in debt collection or credit control.
  • Excellent negotiation and persuasion skills with a customer-centric approach.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and at least two other official South African languages (e.g., isiZulu, Sesotho, Xhosa).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and discretion.
  • Resilience and ability to handle difficult conversations professionally.
  • Strong attention to detail and record-keeping skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant NQF Level qualification in Debt Recovery, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience with collections software and CRM systems specific to the financial services sector.
  • Previous experience working within a bank or other regulated financial institution.
