Job Description

We are actively seeking a highly skilled, dedicated, and experienced Dairy Farm Manager to take the reins of our extensive and well-established operations at Klaverland Melkboerdery. This critical leadership role encompasses the comprehensive oversight of all dairy production activities, demanding a hands-on approach combined with strategic foresight. You will be directly responsible for optimising herd health, nutrition programmes, reproduction cycles, and the efficiency of our milking operations. Your duties will extend to leading, mentoring, and managing our dedicated farm staff, ensuring all team members are proficient, motivated, and adhere to best practices. A core part of your mandate will be the meticulous management of feed budgets, procurement, and inventory, along with the upkeep and maintenance of all farm infrastructure, machinery, and equipment. Furthermore, you will be tasked with maintaining accurate and thorough records for production, breeding, health, and financial performance, utilising our integrated farm management software. Ensuring strict compliance with all relevant agricultural, environmental, and animal welfare regulations is paramount. The successful candidate will be a proactive problem-solver, capable of implementing innovative farming techniques to enhance yield, reduce costs, and improve overall farm sustainability. You will collaborate closely with farm owners and external consultants, providing detailed reports, conducting performance analyses, and contributing to the strategic planning for the farm’s long-term growth and profitability. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all daily operations of the dairy farm, including milking, feeding, breeding, and calf rearing.
  • Oversee herd health programmes, including veterinary care, vaccinations, and disease prevention.
  • Develop and implement effective feed management strategies to ensure optimal herd nutrition and milk production.
  • Lead, train, and supervise farm staff, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Monitor and manage farm budgets, expenses, and inventory, including feed, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of milk production, breeding cycles, animal health, and financial transactions.
  • Ensure compliance with all animal welfare standards, environmental regulations, and health and safety protocols.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of farm machinery, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Implement and evaluate new technologies and farming practices to improve efficiency and sustainability.
  • Report regularly to farm owners/stakeholders on performance, challenges, and strategic opportunities.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of proven experience in dairy farm management.
  • Demonstrable expertise in animal husbandry, herd health, and nutrition.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in farm management software and general computer literacy.
  • Sound understanding of agricultural economics and budget management.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in Agriculture, Animal Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced dairy technologies and automated milking systems.
  • Knowledge of local agricultural regulations and industry best practices.
  • Certifications in animal first aid or specific farm machinery operation.
