Job Description

As a Cross-Border Trade Compliance Specialist at Mitsubishi Corporation, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring our extensive global trade operations adhere to an intricate web of international and national regulations. In an era where global supply chains are increasingly complex and regulatory landscapes are constantly evolving, your expertise will be critical in safeguarding our reputation, mitigating risks, and enabling seamless cross-border transactions across our diverse business segments. You will be responsible for interpreting complex trade laws, developing robust compliance frameworks, and providing expert guidance to internal stakeholders across various business units. This role demands a proactive, detail-oriented professional with a deep understanding of import/export controls, customs regulations, sanctions, and anti-dumping measures. You will be at the forefront of identifying potential compliance risks, implementing preventative measures, and fostering a strong culture of compliance throughout the organization. Your contributions will directly support Mitsubishi Corporation’s commitment to ethical business practices and its sustained success in the global marketplace, helping us navigate the intricacies of international commerce with integrity and efficiency. Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, interpret, and disseminate updates on international trade regulations, including import/export controls, customs laws, sanctions programs (OFAC, UN, EU, Japan), and anti-dumping/countervailing duty measures.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive trade compliance policies, procedures, and internal controls aligned with global best practices and local requirements.
  • Provide expert guidance and training to business units on trade compliance matters, ensuring adherence to regulations for various transactions and projects.
  • Conduct risk assessments of trade activities, identify potential compliance gaps, and recommend effective mitigation strategies.
  • Manage and oversee customs declarations, documentation, and licensing requirements for cross-border shipments, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
  • Coordinate with customs authorities, government agencies, and external counsel on compliance inquiries, audits, and investigations.
  • Perform internal audits and compliance reviews to assess the effectiveness of existing controls and identify areas for improvement.
  • Stay informed about technological advancements in trade compliance solutions and recommend tools or systems to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Support the resolution of complex trade-related issues, including classification, valuation, origin, and preferential trade agreements.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in International Trade, Law, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in cross-border trade compliance within a multinational corporation, trading house, or logistics provider.
  • In-depth knowledge of Japanese customs laws and international trade regulations (e.g., Export Control Law of Japan, EAR, ITAR, EU regulations).
  • Proficiency in both Japanese (native or fluent) and English (business fluent) for communication with global stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex legal and regulatory texts.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively train and advise internal teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and work effectively under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or professional certification in customs, trade compliance (e.g., CUSDEC Specialist, Certified Customs Specialist).
  • Experience with Global Trade Management (GTM) software and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Knowledge of specific industry regulations relevant to commodities, chemicals, or industrial machinery.
  • Experience in risk management and internal audit related to trade compliance.
