Job Description

Are you a driven, empathetic, and results-oriented individual with a passion for community development and financial inclusion? LAPO Microfinance Bank is seeking a dedicated Credit Officer to join our dynamic team in Owerri, Imo State. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in extending financial services to individuals and small businesses within our target communities, helping them to access the credit they need to grow.

The Credit Officer is the face of LAPO MfB in the community, responsible for identifying potential clients, assessing their financial needs and repayment capacity, and ensuring the timely and efficient disbursement and recovery of loans. This role involves significant fieldwork, engaging directly with clients in their businesses and homes, building strong relationships based on trust and mutual respect. You will conduct thorough background checks, evaluate business viability, and guide clients through the loan application process, ensuring compliance with the bank’s policies and regulatory guidelines.

Beyond just loan processing, you will play a crucial role in providing financial literacy education, advising clients on best business practices, and monitoring the progress of their ventures. Your ability to communicate effectively, analyze situations critically, and maintain a high level of integrity will be key to your success and the success of our clients. Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and recruit prospective clients within the target market segments in Owerri and surrounding areas.
  • Conduct thorough loan appraisals, including business analysis, cash flow projections, and collateral assessments.
  • Process loan applications, ensuring all required documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Disburse approved loans in a timely manner and provide financial advisory services to clients.
  • Monitor loan utilization, client business performance, and repayment schedules to ensure portfolio quality.
  • Aggressively pursue loan repayments and implement effective recovery strategies for delinquent loans.
  • Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with clients through regular field visits and engagement.
  • Educate clients on LAPO MfB's products, services, and financial management best practices.
  • Prepare and submit regular reports on loan portfolio performance, client activities, and market trends.
  • Ensure strict adherence to the bank's credit policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in community outreach programs and initiatives to promote financial inclusion.

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a microfinance institution or financial services sector.
  • Familiarity with the Owerri market and local business environment.
  • Ability to speak local languages (e.g., Igbo) will be an added advantage.
  • Proven track record of meeting and exceeding targets in a credit or sales role.
