Job Description
Standard Bank Mozambique is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Corporate Legal Counsel to join our dynamic legal team in Maputo. This critical role involves providing expert legal advice and support across all aspects of the bank’s operations, ensuring compliance with Mozambican laws and regulations, as well as internal policies and international best practices. The successful candidate will be instrumental in managing legal risks, drafting and reviewing complex legal documents, advising on corporate governance, and representing the bank in various legal matters. Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive legal advice and support to all business units and departments within Standard Bank Mozambique.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of legal documents, including contracts, agreements, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure the bank's operations comply with all relevant Mozambican laws, regulations, and internal governance frameworks, including banking, finance, consumer protection, and data privacy laws.
- Manage and mitigate legal risks associated with the bank's activities, products, and services.
- Advise on corporate governance matters, including board resolutions, company secretarial duties, and compliance with statutory requirements.
- Represent the bank in dealings with external legal counsel, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders.
- Conduct legal research and provide opinions on complex legal issues impacting the bank.
- Assist in the development and delivery of legal training programs for staff.
- Support litigation efforts, working closely with external counsel where necessary.
- Keep abreast of legislative changes and judicial developments relevant to the financial services sector in Mozambique and provide proactive advice.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and implement legal strategies that align with business objectives.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Law (Licenciatura em Direito) from a recognized university.
- Minimum of 6 years post-qualification experience in corporate law, commercial law, or financial services law.
- Proven expertise in Mozambican corporate law, commercial law, and financial services regulations.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills (oral and written) in both Portuguese and English.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and professional judgment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree (Mestrado) in Law or a related field.
- Experience working in a leading law firm or in-house legal department within the banking or financial services sector.
- Familiarity with international banking regulations and compliance standards (e.g., Basel III, AML/CFT).
- Membership in the Mozambican Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados de Moçambique).
