Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Consultant Surgeon to join our dynamic surgical team within Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated professional to contribute to a leading healthcare organisation renowned for its clinical excellence and groundbreaking research. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality surgical care, participating in multidisciplinary team meetings, and contributing to the training and mentorship of junior medical staff. You will be expected to manage a diverse caseload, perform complex surgical procedures, and provide expert clinical opinion across various surgical sub-specialties. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, and management for patients requiring surgical intervention.
  • Perform a wide range of complex surgical procedures with proficiency and adherence to best practice guidelines.
  • Lead and participate in regular outpatient clinics, ward rounds, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Contribute to the on-call rota, providing emergency surgical cover as required.
  • Supervise, mentor, and provide education to junior medical staff, including registrars, residents, and medical students.
  • Engage in clinical audit, research, and service development initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and improve surgical practice.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records in accordance with Trust policies and professional standards.
  • Participate in governance activities, including incident reporting, risk management, and clinical effectiveness programs.

Required Skills

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practice.
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or within six months of obtaining CCT/CESR) in a relevant surgical specialty.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience in a broad range of surgical procedures and patient management.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-centred approach.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD) in a relevant medical or surgical field.
  • Experience in clinical teaching and supervision of junior medical staff.
  • Evidence of active participation in research and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Sub-specialty interest and fellowship training relevant to the department's needs.
