Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice on planning applications affecting protected species, habitats, listed buildings, and conservation areas.
- Conduct site visits to assess ecological and heritage impacts, providing detailed reports and recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with UK and European environmental legislation and local planning policies.
- Develop and implement strategies for biodiversity enhancement and habitat restoration.
- Engage with local communities, landowners, and stakeholders on conservation matters and public awareness campaigns.
- Prepare and present reports to planning committees, public inquiries, and other forums.
- Monitor and evaluate conservation projects and initiatives.
- Contribute to the development of local plans, policies, and supplementary planning guidance related to conservation and environmental protection.
Required Skills
- Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Heritage Management, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation (e.g., Wildlife and Countryside Act, Habitats Regulations).
- Understanding of planning policy as it relates to conservation and heritage assets.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
- Proven ability to conduct ecological surveys and assessments.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for site visits.
- Proficiency in GIS and other relevant software for data analysis and mapping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Membership of a professional body (e.g., CIEEM, RTPI, IHBC).
- Experience working within a local authority planning or environmental department.
- Knowledge of the ecology and heritage of Cumbria and the North West of England.
- Experience in community engagement and public consultation.
- Familiarity with biodiversity net gain principles and implementation.
