Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic Nursing Aide to join our compassionate team, specializing in elderly support within Kapenguria County Hospital. This vital role is central to our commitment to providing dignified, person-centered care for our elderly patients. As a Nursing Aide focused on elderly support, you will play an instrumental role in enhancing the quality of life for our seniors, assisting them with daily living activities, and ensuring their comfort and well-being. This position goes beyond basic care; it requires a genuine passion for engaging with the elderly, understanding their unique needs, and fostering an environment of respect and warmth. You will work closely under the supervision of Registered Nurses, contributing significantly to the overall care plan and observing changes in patients’ conditions that require attention. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, a patient-first attitude, and a strong sense of responsibility. You will be instrumental in creating a supportive atmosphere where our elderly patients feel valued, secure, and cared for. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist elderly patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and feeding.
  • Monitor and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) accurately and report any changes to the nursing staff.
  • Assist patients with mobility, transfers, and ambulation using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients, ensuring tidiness of rooms and common areas.
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to elderly patients, engaging them in conversation and light activities.
  • Assist with meal preparation and feeding, ensuring patients receive adequate nutrition and hydration.
  • Observe and document any changes in patients' physical, mental, or emotional state and report promptly to the Registered Nurse.
  • Support nurses in implementing care plans and carrying out specific medical procedures as delegated and within scope of practice.
  • Respond to patient calls and emergencies in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assist with medication reminders, ensuring patients adhere to their prescribed schedules.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information and adhere to all hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge in elder care.

Required Skills

  • Certificate in Nursing Aide, Home Health Aide, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 1 year of practical experience in a healthcare setting, preferably with elderly patients.
  • Demonstrated compassion, empathy, and patience for the elderly.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively within a team.
  • Basic knowledge of vital signs monitoring and basic first aid.
  • Physical stamina to assist patients with mobility and perform duties requiring standing, walking, and lifting.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and ethical care practices.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including weekends and public holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Kenya Enrolled Nurse (KEN) or Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) qualification.
  • Additional training or certification in gerontology or elderly care.
  • Experience working in a care home or a dedicated geriatric ward.
  • Proficiency in local languages spoken in West Pokot County (e.g., Pokot, Swahili) in addition to English.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle challenging situations with calm and professionalism.
