Job Description

Action Against Hunger (ACF) is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Community Health Worker to join our team in Maiduguri, Borno State. The Community Health Worker will play a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of vulnerable communities. This position demands a dedicated individual committed to making a real difference in the lives of others. Your responsibilities will include conducting household surveys, identifying malnourished children and pregnant/lactating women, educating community members on health and hygiene practices, providing basic healthcare services including growth monitoring, and working closely with other health professionals to ensure effective program implementation. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills, be comfortable working in challenging environments, and possess a deep understanding of the local context. This is a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to work with a dedicated team to combat malnutrition and improve the lives of people affected by the conflict in Borno State.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct household surveys to identify vulnerable individuals.
  • Screen children under five for malnutrition and refer cases appropriately.
  • Provide health education to community members on various health topics (e.g., hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention).
  • Conduct growth monitoring and weigh children.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all activities and data collected.
  • Collaborate effectively with other health workers and community leaders.
  • Participate in regular training and meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in community-based health work (preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of nutrition and hygiene principles
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Fluency in English and local languages (Hausa, Kanuri)
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality
  • Ability to work in challenging and insecure environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or certificate in community health, nursing, or a related field
  • Previous experience working with NGOs in a similar role
  • Experience working in conflict-affected areas
  • Motorcycle riding skills
