Job Description
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is seeking dedicated and compassionate Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) to join our public health team in Brass, Bayelsa. This pivotal role involves delivering essential primary healthcare services, promoting health education, and implementing community-based health programs directly within the local communities. You will be at the forefront of improving health outcomes, preventing diseases, and empowering residents with the knowledge and tools to lead healthier lives. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct household visits to assess health needs and provide basic health services, including immunizations, maternal and child health care, and family planning.
- Deliver health education talks and workshops on topics such as hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, disease prevention (e.g., malaria, HIV/AIDS), and basic first aid.
- Administer basic treatments for common ailments, provide wound care, and dispense essential medications under supervision.
- Refer patients with complex health issues to appropriate higher-level health facilities or specialists.
- Collect and maintain accurate health data, including birth and death records, disease prevalence, and program participation, for reporting and analysis.
- Organize and participate in community health campaigns, screening programs, and outreach activities.
- Collaborate with community leaders, local authorities, and other healthcare professionals to identify health priorities and implement effective interventions.
- Monitor environmental health conditions and advocate for improved water, sanitation, and waste management practices.
- Provide counseling and support on health-related matters, fostering trust and rapport within the community.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay updated on best practices in community health.
Required Skills
- Diploma in Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW) from a recognized institution.
- Proven experience in community health outreach and primary healthcare delivery.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse community members.
- Empathy, patience, and a genuine passion for serving underserved populations.
- Basic knowledge of common diseases, their prevention, and treatment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging environments.
- Proficiency in basic data collection and record-keeping.
- Fluency in English and knowledge of local languages spoken in Brass, Bayelsa.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional certifications in public health, first aid, or specific disease management.
