Job Description

Are you a creative and passionate storyteller with a knack for engaging audiences? The National Trust is seeking a dedicated Communications Officer to join our dynamic team in London. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the UK’s most beloved charities, helping to shape our public narrative and inspire support for our vital conservation work. You’ll be instrumental in developing and delivering compelling communications strategies that connect people with our mission, from protecting ancient woodlands to preserving iconic historic homes.

You will be responsible for producing high-quality content for digital channels, press releases, internal communications, and marketing materials. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement integrated communication plans for key projects and campaigns, ensuring alignment with the National Trust’s strategic objectives.
  • Produce engaging and accurate content for a variety of channels, including press releases, website articles, social media posts, newsletters, and internal communications.
  • Manage media relations, responding to enquiries, proactively pitching stories, and building strong relationships with journalists and media contacts.
  • Monitor media coverage and communication performance, providing regular reports and insights to inform future strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams, including marketing, fundraising, and conservation, to ensure consistent messaging and maximise impact.
  • Support the Head of Communications in crisis communications and issues management, preparing statements and ensuring swift and accurate responses.
  • Organise and support PR events, photo calls, and media opportunities at National Trust properties or relevant locations.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of communication processes and best practices within the organisation.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in a communications, PR, or marketing role, preferably within the charity, heritage, or non-profit sector.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong ability to tailor messages for different audiences and platforms.
  • Demonstrable experience in content creation for digital and traditional media.
  • Proficiency in media relations, including writing press releases and pitching stories.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  • A keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, or a related field.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and social media management tools.
  • Understanding of the UK media landscape and current communication trends.
  • Experience working with photographers and videographers to produce visual content.
