Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging and effective lessons, workshops, and tutorials aligned with curriculum objectives and student needs.
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative evaluations, providing timely, constructive, and actionable feedback.
  • Provide one-on-one and group academic support, tutoring students in challenging concepts and supporting independent study.
  • Monitor student attendance, engagement, and overall well-being, liaising with pastoral and support staff as needed to address concerns.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and review of curriculum materials, schemes of work, and teaching resources.
  • Actively participate in departmental meetings, professional development sessions, and college-wide events.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student performance, progress, and attendance using college systems.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment that encourages student participation and respect.
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods and strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Support students in developing essential study skills, exam techniques, and digital literacy.
  • Adhere to all college policies and procedures, including safeguarding and health and safety regulations.

Required Skills

  • Proven teaching or tutoring experience within a college, secondary education, or adult learning setting.
  • Excellent subject matter expertise in at least one core academic or vocational area relevant to college-level study.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with students and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and deliver effective, student-centered lessons and learning activities.
  • Proficiency in using educational technology, Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), and online learning platforms.
  • Empathy, patience, and a genuine passion for student development and educational achievement.
  • Strong classroom management and motivational techniques to foster a productive learning environment.
  • A valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, or willingness to undergo one.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to cater to diverse learning needs and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, CertEd, DET) or working towards one.
  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant subject area.
  • Experience with specific vocational qualifications (e.g., BTECs, NVQs) or A-Level syllabi.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and practices in an educational context.
  • Experience working with students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities.
  • Familiarity with the further education sector and its challenges.
