Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Civil Engineer to join our dynamic team, focusing on projects within the local government and consulting sectors. While this position is primarily remote, candidates must reside in or near Kroonstad, Free State, to facilitate occasional essential site visits, client meetings, and stakeholder engagements within the region. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure development and municipal projects that directly benefit communities in the Free State. You will be instrumental in the planning, design, and implementation phases of diverse civil engineering projects, including water and wastewater infrastructure, road networks, storm-water management, and municipal facilities. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, project managers, and local government officials, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest engineering standards. This is a pivotal role for an engineer who thrives on problem-solving, values community impact, and is adept at managing projects from conceptualisation through to completion. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the design of various civil engineering projects, including roads, storm-water, water reticulation, sewerage, and general municipal infrastructure.
- Conduct feasibility studies, preliminary designs, and detailed engineering designs for local government and consulting projects.
- Prepare tender documentation, specifications, bills of quantities, and contract administration for infrastructure projects.
- Perform technical reviews and quality control checks on drawings, designs, and reports prepared by junior engineers or project teams.
- Liaise effectively with clients, local authorities, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.
- Ensure all designs and project work comply with relevant South African engineering standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff and project team members.
- Monitor project progress, manage budgets, and ensure adherence to project schedules.
- Prepare comprehensive project reports, presentations, and technical documentation.
- Participate in site visits and inspections as required, ensuring compliance with design specifications and quality standards (travel will be limited but essential).
- Identify and mitigate project risks, developing proactive solutions to challenges.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (BEng/BSc Eng)
- Professional registration with ECSA (Pr. Eng) or eligibility for immediate registration.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of post-graduate experience in civil engineering, specifically within local government infrastructure projects or a consulting environment.
- Proficiency in engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Microstation, HEC-RAS, WaterCAD/SewerCAD).
- Strong understanding of relevant South African engineering standards and municipal legislation.
- Proven experience in tender documentation, contract administration (e.g., FIDIC, NEC3, GCC), and project management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting while maintaining strong team collaboration.
- Valid driver's license and own reliable transport for site visits.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with GIS software for infrastructure planning and analysis.
- Familiarity with environmental impact assessment processes and sustainable engineering practices.
- Previous experience working on projects specifically within the Free State province.
- Fluency in Afrikaans or another official South African language.
