The City of Saginaw is seeking a highly motivated and experienced City Planner to join our dynamic Department of Planning and Community Development. Key Responsibilities
- Review and process zoning, site plan, subdivision, and other development applications, ensuring compliance with city ordinances and comprehensive plans.
- Administer and interpret the City's Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations, and other land use development policies.
- Prepare and update long-range comprehensive plans, neighborhood plans, special area plans, and other planning documents.
- Conduct research and analysis on demographic trends, land use patterns, economic development, and environmental factors to inform planning decisions.
- Present planning recommendations and reports to the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, City Council, and other public bodies.
- Engage with the public through meetings, workshops, and direct communication to gather input and build consensus on planning initiatives.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to developers, property owners, and the public regarding planning, zoning, and development regulations.
- Collaborate with other city departments, governmental agencies, and community stakeholders on interdisciplinary projects.
- Manage planning projects from inception to completion, including scope definition, budget tracking, and timeline adherence.
- Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other planning software for data analysis, mapping, and presentation.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, City Planning, Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in urban or regional planning, preferably in a municipal setting.
- Thorough knowledge of urban planning principles, practices, and theories.
- Strong understanding of zoning ordinances, land use law, and development review processes.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for spatial analysis and map creation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Urban Planning, City Planning, or a closely related field.
- Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
- Experience with public engagement strategies and facilitation of community meetings.
