Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Bulk Goods Truck Driver to join our dynamic logistics team. This ‘remote’ role involves operating heavy-duty vehicles to transport essential bulk agricultural commodities such as grain, fertilizer, and feed across the Free State and surrounding regions. While your primary ‘office’ will be the open road, you will be an integral part of our supply chain, ensuring timely and safe delivery of goods crucial to the agricultural sector. You will be expected to manage your routes efficiently, adhere strictly to all road and safety regulations, and maintain the highest standards of vehicle care. Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy-duty trucks (e.g., articulated trucks, rigid trucks with trailers) equipped for bulk goods transport (e.g., tippers, tankers) safely and efficiently.
- Transport bulk agricultural commodities (e.g., maize, wheat, fertilizer, feed) between VKB depots, farms, and delivery points.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and trailers, ensuring roadworthiness and reporting any defects immediately.
- Ensure accurate loading and offloading of bulk goods, adhering to weight restrictions and safety protocols.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, delivery notes, and other required documentation.
- Adhere to all national traffic laws, company policies, and safety regulations, including those specific to hazardous materials transport where applicable.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, logistics managers, and other team members regarding delivery schedules, delays, and any issues encountered.
- Perform minor roadside vehicle maintenance and ensure the cleanliness of the vehicle.
- Represent VKB Group professionally while interacting with clients and the public.
Required Skills
- Valid Code EC (previously Code 14) or Code EC1 driver’s license with a PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) – Goods.
- Minimum of 3 years demonstrable experience as a heavy-duty truck driver, specifically transporting bulk goods.
- Proven track record of safe driving practices and adherence to traffic laws.
- Sound knowledge of vehicle mechanics and ability to perform basic inspections and minor maintenance.
- Excellent time management and route planning skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to complete documentation accurately.
- Physical fitness to handle the demands of long-distance driving and associated tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with various types of bulk trailers (e.g., pneumatic tankers, grain trailers, flatbeds with side extensions).
- Familiarity with the Free State road network and agricultural logistics.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot minor vehicle issues.
- Additional certifications in defensive driving or hazardous materials transport (if applicable to specific routes/goods).
- A track record of reliability and a strong work ethic.
