Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Boiler Maker to join our dynamic maintenance team at Evander Gold Mines. As a Boiler Maker, you will play a critical role in the fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and repair of various steel structures, piping systems, and pressure vessels essential for our mining operations. This position requires an individual with exceptional attention to detail, strong technical proficiency, and a steadfast commitment to safety and quality standards. You will be responsible for interpreting engineering drawings, performing precise measurements, cutting, shaping, and joining metal components using various welding techniques, and ensuring all work complies with industry codes and internal specifications. Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and work from engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine job requirements and material specifications.
- Fabricate, assemble, and erect steel structures, tanks, pressure vessels, pipes, and other metal components.
- Perform various welding techniques (e.g., Arc, TIG, MIG) on different types of metals (carbon steel, stainless steel) to high standards.
- Conduct routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on existing plant equipment and infrastructure.
- Identify defects, diagnose problems, and implement effective solutions to ensure operational continuity.
- Operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment including grinders, cutting torches, bending machines, and presses.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety regulations, policies, and procedures, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) protocols.
- Perform quality checks on finished products to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
- Collaborate effectively with other tradespersons, engineers, and operational staff to complete projects efficiently.
- Assist in the training and mentorship of junior Boiler Makers or apprentices when required.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Required Skills
- Valid Boiler Maker Trade Certificate (Red Seal or equivalent).
- Minimum of 4 years’ post-apprenticeship experience as a Boiler Maker, preferably in a heavy industrial or mining environment.
- Proficiency in various welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW) and ability to pass relevant welding tests.
- Ability to read and accurately interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and P&IDs.
- Strong understanding of metal properties and fabrication techniques.
- Excellent knowledge of health and safety regulations pertinent to welding and fabrication.
- Competency in using a wide range of hand and power tools common to the trade.
- Good physical condition and ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- National Certificate (NQF Level 4) or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Experience working with pressure vessels and heat exchangers.
- Knowledge of risk assessment procedures and safe work permit systems.
- Additional welding certifications (e.g., pressure piping).
- First Aid certification.
- Forklift or overhead crane operating license.
