Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Blasting Technician to join our dynamic team in Fochville, Gauteng. The successful candidate will be instrumental in executing safe and efficient blasting operations in our underground and/or open-pit mining environments, adhering strictly to all company policies, legislative requirements, and environmental regulations. This role requires meticulous planning, precise execution, and a unwavering commitment to safety. As a Blasting Technician, you will be responsible for preparing blast sites, handling and charging explosives, initiating blasts, and ensuring the integrity of the surrounding environment and personnel. You will work closely with mining engineers, geologists, and other operational staff to optimize blast designs and ensure production targets are met while maintaining the highest safety standards. Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute blasting operations according to detailed blast plans and schedules.
- Inspect blast sites to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Handle, transport, and store explosives safely and securely, adhering to all regulatory guidelines.
- Charge blast holes with appropriate explosives and detonators, ensuring correct placement and initiation sequences.
- Conduct pre-blast and post-blast surveys and inspections to assess ground conditions and blast results.
- Operate and maintain blasting equipment, ensuring its proper functioning and reporting any defects.
- Collaborate with mining engineers, geologists, and shift supervisors to optimize blast designs and techniques.
- Maintain accurate records of explosives usage, blast patterns, and incidents.
- Implement and enforce all relevant safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures.
- Participate in incident investigations and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills
- Valid Blasting Certificate (e.g., Grade A/B Blasting Certificate, Competency A/B Certificate for underground/surface mining).
- Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience as a Blasting Technician in a mining environment.
- Thorough knowledge of blasting techniques, explosives handling, and relevant safety legislation (e.g., Mine Health and Safety Act).
- Ability to read and interpret blast plans, geological maps, and engineering drawings.
- Strong understanding of ground control principles and rock mechanics.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Proficiency in fault finding and basic maintenance of blasting equipment.
- High level of safety awareness and commitment to safe working practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- National Diploma in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
- First Aid Certificate.
- Advanced Certificate in Blasting Operations.
- Experience with electronic blasting systems.
- Valid driver's license (Code B or C1).
