Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Blasting Engineer to join our technical services team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in optimizing our blasting operations, ensuring safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness across our mining sites. This pivotal position requires a deep understanding of rock mechanics, explosives engineering, and regulatory compliance. You will be responsible for designing blast patterns, managing explosive inventories, and implementing best practices to achieve desired fragmentation, minimize ground vibrations, and enhance overall productivity. The Blasting Engineer will work closely with mining operations, geology, and safety teams to execute complex blasting projects safely and effectively, contributing directly to our operational targets and sustainability goals. We are looking for an individual who is not only technically proficient but also a strong leader, capable of mentoring junior staff and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and safety within the blasting department. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize blast patterns for various rock types and mining conditions to achieve target fragmentation and minimize dilution.
  • Manage the planning, scheduling, and execution of all blasting activities in compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments and implement control measures to ensure safe handling, storage, and usage of explosives.
  • Monitor blast performance through fragmentation analysis, vibration monitoring, and post-blast evaluations.
  • Prepare detailed blast designs, charge plans, and reports, utilizing specialized blasting software.
  • Collaborate with geology, survey, and production teams to ensure accurate drill hole placement and effective blast sequencing.
  • Maintain accurate records of explosive consumption, inventory, and usage, ensuring compliance with all statutory regulations.
  • Train and mentor blasting crews on best practices, safety procedures, and new technologies.
  • Stay abreast of industry advancements in blasting techniques, explosives technology, and safety regulations.
  • Investigate blasting incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Blasting Engineer in an open pit or underground mining environment.
  • Proven knowledge of explosive properties, blast design principles, and rock mechanics.
  • Proficiency in blast design software (e.g., Surpac, Vulcan, BlastPlan).
  • Strong understanding of relevant mining regulations and safety standards in Zimbabwe.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Valid Blasting License/Certificate for Zimbabwe.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience with electronic blasting systems and advanced blasting techniques.
  • Project management experience in mining operations.
  • Membership in a recognized professional engineering body.
