Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Blaster to join our dynamic mining team in Rustenburg, North West. As a Blaster, you will be an integral part of our underground or surface mining operations, responsible for the safe and efficient execution of all blasting activities. This critical role demands meticulous attention to detail, a deep understanding of explosive materials, and unwavering adherence to the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and company safety standards. You will prepare blast designs, inspect working areas, load blast holes, and initiate blasts, ensuring optimal fragmentation and rock breaking results while prioritizing the safety of all personnel and equipment.
The successful candidate will possess a valid Blasting Certificate for Surface or Underground operations, coupled with proven experience in a similar mining environment. Your expertise will directly contribute to our production targets and operational efficiency, making you a vital asset to our team. Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute blasting operations in accordance with geological plans, blast designs, and operational procedures.
- Safely handle, transport, store, and utilize explosives and accessories, ensuring strict compliance with all regulatory and company guidelines.
- Conduct thorough pre-blast inspections of working areas, ensuring all safety precautions are in place and potential hazards are mitigated.
- Load blast holes accurately and efficiently, confirming correct charge quantities and initiation sequences.
- Operate blasting machines and related equipment in a safe and competent manner.
- Ensure effective communication and coordination with the mining crew, supervisors, and other relevant personnel before, during, and after blasting activities.
- Monitor blast results and recommend adjustments for continuous improvement in fragmentation and ground control.
- Complete all required legal and administrative documentation accurately and timeously, including blast reports and logbooks.
- Maintain a high level of housekeeping in the working area and ensure all equipment is well-maintained and in safe working order.
- Actively participate in safety meetings, risk assessments, and incident investigations, promoting a proactive safety culture.
Required Skills
- Valid South African Blasting Certificate (e.g., Competency A & B for underground or relevant surface blasting certificate).
- Minimum of 4 years (48 months) proven experience as a certified Blaster in a hard rock mining environment.
- In-depth knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and associated regulations.
- Proficiency in blast design principles, explosive characteristics, and initiation systems.
- Demonstrated ability to identify and assess risks associated with blasting operations.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to clearly convey instructions and reports.
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and in challenging mining conditions.
- Valid Code 08 (B) driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant supervisory or team leadership experience within a mining context.
- Formal training in Advanced Blasting Techniques or Rock Breaking.
- First Aid Certificate.
- Experience with various mining methods (e.g., conventional, mechanised, opencast).
- Certification in Basic Fire Fighting.
