Are you a dedicated and skilled Biomedical Engineer seeking a challenging and rewarding role within a leading healthcare institution? Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a talented individual to join our dynamic Clinical Engineering team. This critical role involves the comprehensive management, maintenance, and support of a vast array of medical equipment essential for patient diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring across our diverse hospital sites. As a Biomedical Engineer with MFT, you will be responsible for conducting planned preventative maintenance, performing intricate repairs, calibrating sophisticated medical instruments, and ensuring all equipment complies with national and international safety standards and regulatory requirements. This position offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology, from life support systems and imaging equipment to surgical tools and laboratory analyzers. Key Responsibilities
- Perform planned preventative maintenance, calibration, and complex repairs on a wide range of medical devices.
- Conduct fault diagnosis and rectification on critical care equipment, surgical instruments, diagnostic machinery, and patient monitoring systems.
- Ensure all medical equipment operates safely and effectively, adhering to relevant British Standards, MHRA guidelines, and Trust policies.
- Participate in the commissioning, acceptance testing, and decommissioning of new and obsolete medical equipment.
- Provide expert technical advice and support to clinical staff, offering guidance on equipment operation, troubleshooting, and best practices.
- Deliver formal and informal training sessions to clinical users on the safe and effective use of medical devices.
- Contribute to the procurement process by evaluating new medical technologies, assessing technical specifications, and participating in vendor discussions.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of all maintenance, repair, and calibration activities using the Trust's asset management system.
- Investigate and report medical device incidents, participating in root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
- Actively engage in continuous professional development, staying abreast of advancements in biomedical engineering and healthcare technology.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including clinicians, nurses, and other technical staff, to optimize equipment utilization and patient outcomes.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in the maintenance, repair, and calibration of medical equipment within a hospital or clinical setting.
- Strong understanding of medical device regulations, quality management systems (e.g., ISO 13485), and patient safety standards.
- Proficiency in fault finding, diagnostic techniques, and problem-solving for complex electronic, mechanical, and software-controlled systems.
- Excellent technical communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with clinical staff and manufacturers.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, managing workloads effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Competence in using specialist test equipment and computerised maintenance management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related field.
- Registration with a relevant professional body (e.g., Clinical Scientist, Chartered Engineer, Engineering Council UK).
- Specialised knowledge or certifications in specific medical device areas (e.g., anaesthesia, ventilators, cardiology, imaging).
- Experience with medical device cybersecurity principles and practices.
- Previous involvement in medical equipment procurement and project management.
