Job Description

Caribou Biosciences is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Bioengineer to join our Process Development team in Berkeley, CA. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in developing, optimizing, and scaling manufacturing processes for our cutting-edge gene-edited cell therapies. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the advancement of next-generation CRISPR-based therapeutics, working at the forefront of genetic engineering and cellular manufacturing. You will apply principles of biochemical engineering, cell biology, and analytical science to design and execute experiments, analyze complex data, and translate laboratory-scale processes into robust, scalable, and reproducible manufacturing platforms. The ideal candidate will possess a strong scientific foundation, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a passion for innovation within the biotechnology sector. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments to develop and optimize upstream and downstream processes for gene-edited cell therapies, including cell culture, transfection, purification, and formulation.
  • Utilize advanced bioreactor systems and process analytical technologies (PAT) to monitor and control critical process parameters (CPPs) and critical quality attributes (CQAs).
  • Perform extensive data analysis, interpretation, and visualization to drive process understanding and improvement, utilizing statistical software (e.g., JMP, R).
  • Develop and qualify analytical methods for in-process testing, product characterization, and release testing.
  • Author detailed technical reports, study protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Research, Analytical Development, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to ensure seamless technology transfer and product advancement.
  • Stay current with scientific literature and industry trends in cell and gene therapy manufacturing, incorporating new technologies and strategies into process development efforts.
  • Present findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders and contribute to scientific publications and patent applications.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related field with 0+ years of industry experience OR M.S. with 3+ years of relevant industry experience OR B.S. with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Proven experience in mammalian cell culture and bioreactor operations (e.g., stirred tank, rocking motion).
  • Strong understanding of biological processes, including cell metabolism, protein expression, and gene editing technologies (e.g., CRISPR).
  • Proficiency in experimental design (DoE) and statistical analysis for process optimization.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques such as flow cytometry, ELISA, qPCR, and HPLC.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex data clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with aseptic processing and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) principles.
  • Proficiency in automation and high-throughput screening technologies.
  • Prior experience in cell and gene therapy process development, particularly with allogeneic cell products.
  • Knowledge of viral vector production and characterization.
  • Familiarity with process modeling and simulation tools.
