Job Description

The Ekiti State Judiciary is seeking a highly vigilant, reliable, and professional Bailiff to join our dedicated team in Ado-Ekiti. As a Bailiff, you will be an integral part of maintaining the decorum, safety, and operational efficiency of our courtrooms and judicial premises. This vital role involves ensuring the security of judges, court staff, litigants, and the general public, as well as maintaining order during court proceedings. You will be responsible for executing court directives, serving legal documents, managing court exhibits, and providing essential support to judges and magistrates. This position requires an individual with exceptional integrity, strong observational skills, and the ability to act decisively and calmly under pressure. Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain order and decorum in courtrooms during proceedings, ensuring all judicial protocols are strictly followed.
  • Ensure the safety and security of judges, magistrates, court staff, jurors, witnesses, and the public within the court premises.
  • Serve summonses, subpoenas, warrants, and other legal documents as directed by the court, ensuring timely and proper delivery.
  • Escort defendants, prisoners, and witnesses to and from the courtroom and other designated areas, maintaining secure custody.
  • Manage and safeguard court exhibits and evidence, ensuring their proper handling, storage, and presentation during trials.
  • Provide assistance to judges and magistrates as needed, including preparing courtrooms, fetching documents, and attending to their requests.
  • Operate and monitor security equipment such as metal detectors, surveillance cameras, and access control systems.
  • Enforce court rules and directives, reporting any violations, security concerns, or suspicious activities to appropriate authorities immediately.
  • Assist with crowd control and emergency response within the court facilities, following established procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of duties performed, incidents reported, and documents served, adhering to data protection guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Strong sense of responsibility, integrity, and ethical conduct.
  • Excellent observational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to maintain composure, exercise discretion, and act professionally under pressure.
  • Basic understanding of court procedures, legal terminology, and the Nigerian judicial system.
  • Physical fitness and ability to stand for extended periods, walk long distances, and perform light physical duties.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) for record-keeping.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (at least 1 year) in law enforcement, security services, public service, or a similar field.
  • A relevant certification or training in security management, law enforcement, or public administration.
  • SSCE/GCE or equivalent educational qualification with at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics.
  • Familiarity with the local customs and cultural nuances of Ado-Ekiti and Ekiti State.
