Job Description
The Historic New Orleans Collection seeks a highly motivated and experienced Architectural Historian to join our research team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in expanding our understanding of New Orleans’s rich architectural heritage. This position involves conducting in-depth research on significant buildings and architectural styles, analyzing historical documents and photographs, contributing to exhibitions and publications, and collaborating with other researchers and staff members. The ideal candidate possesses a deep passion for architectural history, particularly within the context of New Orleans, and a strong commitment to sharing historical knowledge with a wide audience. This position offers the unique opportunity to contribute to a world-renowned institution dedicated to preserving and celebrating the unique architectural identity of New Orleans. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, excellent research and writing skills, and the ability to effectively communicate complex historical information to diverse audiences. You will work closely with curators, archivists, and other researchers to contribute to HNOC’s ongoing projects and initiatives, developing and delivering presentations, lectures, and workshops for both internal and external audiences. A key aspect of the role involves contributing to the organization’s digital initiatives, encompassing the digitization of archival materials and the development of engaging online content. The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team setting is essential. This position requires regular interaction with the public, researchers, and other stakeholders. The candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth research on New Orleans architecture, utilizing primary and secondary sources.
- Analyze historical documents, photographs, maps, and other archival materials.
- Contribute to the development of exhibitions, publications, and other scholarly projects.
- Present research findings to diverse audiences through lectures, workshops, and publications.
- Collaborate with other researchers, curators, and staff members.
- Assist in the digitization of archival materials and the development of online content.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of research findings.
