Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily feeding, watering, and administration of prescribed medications to animals under direct supervision.
  • Perform routine cleaning and disinfection of animal enclosures, kennels, and common areas to maintain hygiene standards.
  • Monitor animal behaviour and health, reporting any changes, concerns, or emergencies to senior staff immediately.
  • Provide basic grooming, exercise, and enrichment activities to ensure the mental and physical well-being of animals.
  • Assist veterinary technicians and veterinarians with restraining animals for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal feeding, medication, and general observations.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing animals with care, ensuring proper documentation and safe transfer.
  • Support the general upkeep of the facility, including laundry, stock rotation, and maintaining equipment cleanliness.
  • Engage with the public respectfully, answering general inquiries and providing basic information regarding animal care when appropriate.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge in animal care.

Required Skills

  • Genuine passion for animal welfare and a strong empathetic nature towards animals.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively within a team.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Reliable, punctual, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Basic computer literacy for record-keeping.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift moderate weights, bend, and stand for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working with various animal species, including those that may be anxious or challenging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • GCSEs or equivalent, particularly in science subjects.
  • Previous experience volunteering or working with animals (e.g., pet ownership, farm work, animal rescue).
  • First Aid certification (human or animal).
  • Knowledge of basic animal husbandry and hygiene practices.
