Job Description

As an Alumina Plant Process Technician at JISCO Alpart Jamaica, you will be a vital member of our operations team, directly contributing to the efficient and safe production of high-quality alumina. This role involves monitoring, controlling, and optimizing various stages of the alumina refining process, from bauxite digestion to alumina calcination. You will be responsible for ensuring that all plant operations adhere to strict safety protocols, environmental regulations, and production targets. Working in a dynamic, 24/7 industrial environment, you will operate and troubleshoot complex machinery, manage process parameters, and conduct routine inspections to identify and resolve potential issues proactively. This position requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and control critical process parameters using Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and other control interfaces to maintain optimal operational conditions.
  • Operate and adjust various plant equipment, including pumps, valves, filters, heat exchangers, and kilns, to ensure efficient process flow and product quality.
  • Conduct regular plant rounds, visual inspections, and equipment checks to identify abnormal conditions, leaks, and potential safety or operational hazards.
  • Collect and analyze process samples, performing routine laboratory tests to ensure product quality and adherence to strict specifications.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues, diagnose equipment malfunctions, and assist maintenance personnel in implementing timely corrective and preventive actions.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all company safety policies, environmental regulations, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all times.
  • Maintain accurate operational logs, production data, and detailed incident reports for effective record-keeping and analysis.
  • Participate actively in safety meetings, training sessions, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance plant performance and safety culture.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, and other team members regarding plant status, operational challenges, and performance metrics.
  • Assist in the startup and shutdown procedures of various plant sections as required, following established protocols.

Required Skills

  • Associate's Degree or Diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology, Process Operations, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Process Technician in an industrial manufacturing environment, preferably in alumina, bauxite, or chemical processing.
  • Proficiency in operating Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and other process control interfaces.
  • Strong understanding of chemical processes, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and basic metallurgy.
  • Ability to read and interpret Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to strict operational protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting and team collaboration.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, in an industrial plant setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience with specific alumina refinery processes such as digestion, clarification, precipitation, and calcination.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
  • Certified in relevant industrial safety practices (e.g., Confined Space Entry, Lockout/Tagout).
  • Proficiency in using maintenance management systems (CMMS).
