As we rapidly expand our AI capabilities and integrate machine learning models into critical operations, we recognize the paramount importance of embedding robust ethical principles and responsible governance throughout our entire AI lifecycle. We are seeking a highly experienced, innovative, and passionately ethical AI Ethics Consultant to join our dynamic and forward-thinking team in Maputo.
In this pivotal and influential role, you will be instrumental in shaping Standard Bank Mozambique’s institutional approach to responsible AI. You will work collaboratively and cross-functionally with a diverse array of stakeholders, including data scientists, AI engineers, product managers, legal teams, risk management, and various business units, to proactively identify, rigorously assess, and effectively mitigate potential ethical, social, and reputational risks associated with our AI applications. Your profound expertise will directly guide the development and implementation of cutting-edge ethical AI frameworks, comprehensive policies, and industry-leading best practices. Your ultimate goal will be to ensure that our AI systems are consistently fair, transparent, accountable, privacy-preserving, and beneficial to all our customers and the broader Mozambican society. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain an ethical AI framework and governance policies tailored to Standard Bank Mozambique's operations and local regulatory landscape.
- Conduct comprehensive ethical risk assessments for new and existing AI systems, identifying potential biases, fairness issues, privacy concerns, and societal impacts.
- Advise data science and engineering teams on best practices for designing, developing, and deploying AI models that adhere to ethical principles (e.g., fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy).
- Collaborate with legal and compliance departments to ensure AI initiatives comply with national and international data protection laws (e.g., GDPR principles where applicable, local privacy laws) and ethical guidelines.
- Develop and deliver training programs and workshops on AI ethics for employees across various departments, fostering a culture of responsible AI.
- Act as a subject matter expert and internal consultant on complex AI ethics dilemmas, providing guidance and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Stay abreast of emerging trends, research, and regulatory developments in AI ethics, machine learning fairness, and responsible innovation.
- Establish metrics and reporting mechanisms to monitor the ethical performance and impact of AI systems.
- Facilitate ethical reviews of AI projects and provide clear, actionable feedback to project teams.
- Champion responsible AI practices throughout the organization, advocating for human-centered design and participatory approaches.
Required Skills
- Deep understanding of AI/ML concepts, algorithms, and development lifecycles.
- Proven expertise in AI ethics principles, frameworks (e.g., OECD AI Principles), and regulatory landscapes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and mitigate complex ethical risks.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to engage diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to translate complex technical and ethical concepts into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Experience with data governance, privacy regulations, and responsible data usage.
- Proficiency in conducting ethical impact assessments and bias detection techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
- Strong ethical reasoning and critical thinking capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Philosophy, Ethics, Law, Public Policy, or a related quantitative or qualitative field.
- Certifications in AI Ethics, Responsible AI, or related areas.
- Experience in the financial services industry, particularly with AI applications in banking.
- Familiarity with Mozambican or Southern African legal and regulatory environment concerning data and technology.
- Experience working with large datasets and implementing MLOps best practices with an ethical lens.
- Fluency in Portuguese is a significant advantage.
