Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Agronomist to join our dynamic team in the Amalienstein, Western Cape region. This crucial role operates on a hybrid model, combining essential field work on farms with office-based analysis and strategic planning. As an Agronomist at SSK, you will be instrumental in providing expert technical support and guidance to our farmer members, helping them optimize crop production, improve soil health, and implement sustainable farming practices. You will be responsible for conducting on-site farm assessments, diagnosing plant health issues, recommending appropriate fertilization, pest, and disease management strategies, and advising on irrigation and crop rotation plans. This role demands a deep understanding of local climatic conditions, soil types, and crop varieties prevalent in the Western Cape.
Your day-to-day will involve extensive collaboration with farmers, offering practical advice and training on new agricultural technologies and best practices. You will interpret soil and plant tissue analysis results, develop comprehensive nutrient management plans, and assist with precision agriculture initiatives. A significant part of your role will involve staying abreast of the latest scientific advancements in agronomy, integrating research findings into practical applications for our members. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular field visits to member farms to assess crop health, soil conditions, and overall farm performance.
- Diagnose plant diseases, pest infestations, and nutrient deficiencies, providing timely and effective solutions.
- Develop and implement tailored fertilization, irrigation, crop protection, and soil management plans.
- Provide expert advice and technical support to farmers on optimal crop production techniques, variety selection, and planting schedules.
- Interpret soil and plant tissue analysis reports, translating data into actionable recommendations.
- Promote and educate farmers on sustainable farming practices, including conservation agriculture and integrated pest management.
- Assist farmers in adopting new agricultural technologies and precision farming techniques.
- Monitor crop development, yield estimates, and harvest quality, providing feedback and adjustments.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on farm visits, recommendations, and results.
- Stay informed about industry trends, research, and regulatory changes relevant to agronomy.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to enhance service delivery and product offerings.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience as an Agronomist, preferably in the Western Cape region.
- Strong knowledge of crop production cycles, soil science, plant pathology, and entomology.
- Proven ability to diagnose and recommend solutions for crop health issues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively advise farmers.
- Proficiency in data analysis and report writing.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively within the region.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a hybrid environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Agronomy or a related specialized field.
- Professional certification in Crop Science or Agronomy.
