Job Description

Standard Bank is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Agricultural Loan Officer to join our dynamic team, working remotely from the Vrede, Free State region. This pivotal role involves managing and growing a portfolio of agricultural clients, assessing their financial needs, and structuring appropriate lending solutions. You will be instrumental in building strong, lasting relationships with farmers, agribusinesses, and relevant industry stakeholders, providing expert advice on financing options, risk management, and market trends crucial to the Free State’s agricultural landscape. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a diverse portfolio of agricultural clients, fostering long-term, trust-based relationships.
  • Conduct thorough financial analysis, credit assessments, and due diligence for loan applications from farmers and agribusinesses.
  • Structure and recommend appropriate lending products and financial solutions tailored to individual client needs and risk profiles.
  • Monitor client loan performance, proactively identifying potential risks or opportunities and implementing timely interventions.
  • Provide expert advice on agricultural finance, evolving market trends, government incentives, and effective risk management strategies.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all internal policies, procedures, and relevant financial regulations and legislative frameworks.
  • Actively participate in business development initiatives and community engagement to expand the agricultural client base and enhance brand presence.
  • Prepare detailed, well-reasoned credit proposals and present them confidently to credit committees.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of agricultural industry developments, technological advancements, and macroeconomic factors affecting the sector.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) as an Agricultural Loan Officer or similar credit-focused role in financial services.
  • Strong understanding of agricultural business models, including crop cycles, livestock management, and associated inherent risks.
  • Excellent financial analysis, credit assessment, and robust risk management skills.
  • Proficiency in financial modeling, loan structuring, and cash flow analysis specific to agricultural operations.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage a remote client portfolio effectively, and demonstrate strong self-motivation.
  • High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and a client-centric approach.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel locally within the Free State region for essential client visits when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Postgraduate qualification (e.g., MBA, Honours in Agricultural Economics or Finance).
  • Existing network and established relationships within the Free State agricultural community.
  • Experience with CRM software, modern lending platforms, and digital collaboration tools.
  • Fluency in Afrikaans (highly beneficial for effective client interactions in the region).
  • Certification in credit risk management or agricultural finance.
